Problemes plaisans et delectables qui se font par les nombres

Well first of all i should congratulate everyone on having faced these bored exams with all their might....they are over for me.....atleast....and luckily the chem exam didnt turn out to be that bad...pretty gud i wud say...anyways for the questeon....What is the least number of weights that can be used on a set of scales to weigh any whole number of kilograms from 1 to 40???

p.s. : well if any of u are wondering what the weirdo title is----well its a book i am reading and this question happens to be stated in that...and this question has been taken from a book named as in the title of this blog...

1st of all i re-read your entry and got the book's name...is it in French??...or is it just the title which is in French??

and about my answer..i just got it..you start with one..for two you need to have another weight..for three you could 2+1...for four you need another...each time you need another weight it is because the total of the other weight is less than the one you want to measure...
keep going and you'll get the others... it was actually the currency system that made me think this way...
